Bishop Derek Fernandes of Belgaum Diocese Calls for Peace, Justice and Compassion at Inter-Denominational Christmas Gatherings

Belgaum, December 16, 2025 — Christians from different denominations came together in Hubli and Belgaum earlier this month for joint Christmas celebrations, highlighting themes of peace, justice and social responsibility. The events were organised by the All India United Christian Forum for Human Rights in collaboration with the Ecumenical Commission of the Diocese of Belgaum.

The celebrations were held at St. Paul’s Church in Chetana Colony, Hubli, on December 7, and at the Fatima Cathedral Church campus in Belgaum on December 14, drawing pastors, clergy and lay members from across Christian traditions.

Addressing the gatherings, Bishop Derek Fernandes of Belgaum said Christmas carries a message of righteousness expressed through peace, justice and compassion. Speaking in Hubli, he referred to the birth of Jesus as a symbol of peace, urging participants to reflect on the deeper social meaning behind traditional Christmas observances. In Belgaum, he said that the pursuit of justice must be balanced with mercy, and called on Christians to show solidarity with the poor and marginalised sections of society.

Organisers said the joint celebrations reflected growing cooperation among Christian denominations and a shared commitment to values that extend beyond religious observance. The Ecumenical Commission of the Diocese of Belgaum coordinated the programmes, underlining the role of inter-church collaboration in promoting social harmony and collective responsibility during the Christmas season.
