Kara, Jharkhand, March 15, 2026: Around 250 faithful, including priests, religious and lay leaders, gathered at St. John Maria Vianney Mass Centre of Kara Parish in the Diocese of Khunti for a one-day Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) Animation Programme on March 13, aimed at strengthening grassroots faith communities and promoting active participation in parish life.
The programme began with a solemn Bible procession, symbolising the central place of the Word of God in the life of the Church and in the functioning of Basic Ecclesial Communities. The participants and guests were warmly welcomed, creating a prayerful and fraternal atmosphere for the day’s activities.
During the opening session, representatives from various BEC units shared their experiences of organising regular gatherings in their villages. They highlighted how Bible sharing, prayer meetings, mutual support among families and small community initiatives have helped deepen faith and foster unity within the parish.
The later sessions were led by Fr. George Jacob, Executive Secretary to the CCBI Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities, and Sr. Meena Dangwar, a member of the National Council for BECs. They explained the vision of the CCBI Pastoral Plan and emphasised the importance of building vibrant BECs that promote faith sharing, collaboration and stronger community bonds among the faithful.
The animation programme was organised with the support of Sr. Justina Barla H.C., along with the parish priests — Fr. Joachim Barla, Fr. Filmanus Kerketta, Fr. Hirlalal Punnipurthy and Fr. Bisu Benjamin Aind, the Vicar General — who facilitated the smooth conduct of the event.
Organisers said the initiative sought to renew the mission of Basic Ecclesial Communities in the diocese by encouraging deeper engagement with the Word of God and greater participation of the faithful in the everyday life and mission of the Church.
