A Beacon of Hope: Pope Francis Migrants Centre Opens in Bangalore

Bangalore, Karnataka, December 3, 2025 — A new haven for migrants seeking safety and opportunity has opened in Bangalore with the inauguration of the Pope Francis Migrants Centre. Cardinal Silvano Maria Tomasi, former Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva, blessed and officially launched the centre, which is situated a short distance from Yesvantpur Railway Station.

The centre stands as a clear testament to the Archdiocese of Bangalore’s commitment to serving vulnerable communities. Cardinal Tomasi praised the Archdiocese for its “vibrant community of faith and love,” and commended Archbishop Peter Machado for his dedicated efforts to champion the welfare of migrants across the city.

Archbishop Machado emphasised that the centre reflects the values of Pope Francis, whose deep compassion for migrants shaped his papacy. He also noted the significance of opening the facility on the feast of St. Francis Xavier, a missionary who transformed countless lives in India. In the same spirit, the centre seeks to offer hope and opportunity to those arriving in Bangalore in search of a better future.

Entrusted to the Scalabrini Fathers, the centre will provide essential support and services for migrants, including protection of their rights, skill development, and guidance for integrating into the local community. With Bangalore receiving nearly 3,000 migrants every day, the centre is expected to serve thousands who arrive with dreams of rebuilding their lives.

The inauguration drew the presence of several dignitaries, including Karnataka’s Minister for Energy, K.A. George, and Archbishop Victor Henry Thakur, Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Migrants. Their attendance underscored the growing recognition of the centre’s vital role in responding to the needs of migrant communities.
