75th Death Anniversary of Monsignor Herculano Gonsalves Commemorated With a Holy Mass in Goa

Calangute, Goa, March 21, 2025: The 75th death anniversary of Monsignor Herculano D. Gonsalves, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Handmaids of Christ, was commemorated with a solemn Eucharistic celebration at St. Alex Church in Calangute on March 21. Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão presided over the Mass, which was concelebrated by Fr. Polly Lobo, the parish priest of St. Alex Church, along with other priests. The event paid tribute to Monsignor Herculano’s enduring legacy of faith and service.

During the mass, Cardinal Ferrao delivered a homily on the theme "Inspired by Monsignor Herculano, Let Us Become Proclaimers of Hope." He urged the faithful to draw inspiration from Monsignor Herculano Gonsalves, who became a beacon of hope for those on the margins of society. He encouraged them to embrace their call as proclaimers and missionaries of hope. Referring to Spes non Confundit, Pope Francis' bull of indiction for the Jubilee Year, the Cardinal highlighted the various signs of hope the Pope emphasises—particularly for prisoners, the elderly, the poor, the sick, and the youth. He called upon everyone to become visible signs of hope within their communities.

Cardinal Ferrao recalled Monsignor Herculano’s contributions, particularly his establishment of St. Alex Orphanage and Little Flower High School, which provided education and shelter to those in need. He also noted that by founding Goa’s first diocesan congregation, Monsignor Herculano paved the way for local religious vocations.

During the event, two significant books were released—A Path to Holiness, authored by Sr. Faria Barretto H.C., Superior General of the Congregation, and Letters of Our Founder – Longings of His Heart, compiled by Sr. Adrianne H.C. Cardinal Ferrão had the honour of unveiling both publications, along with a newly framed photograph of Monsignor Herculano.

Expressing gratitude, Sr. Faria Barretto thanked all attendees for their participation in the commemoration. The Herculano Choir led the liturgical singing during the Holy Mass, adding to the solemnity of the occasion.

Born in Cana-Benaulim, Goa, Monsignor Herculano dedicated his life to uplifting the marginalised, particularly women and children. Ordained in 1892, he became a beacon of hope for the marginalised in the early 20th century. He founded several key institutions that embodied his commitment to social welfare. His vision culminated in the founding of the Congregation of the Sisters of Handmaids of Christ in 1934, ensuring that his mission of service would continue for generations.

Concluding the celebration, Cardinal Ferrão expressed his heartfelt wish that Monsignor Herculano, in accordance with God’s will, may one day be recognised as a saint.
