May 20, 2026: Emphasising the Church’s responsibility to foster unity amid diversity and social transformation, Archbishop John Rodrigues of Bombay has called for renewed efforts in formation, social outreach, and collaboration as the Church in Western India responds to the challenges of migration, urbanisation and secularisation.
Reflecting on the realities of Western India in a recent interaction, the Archbishop noted that the region encompasses diverse linguistic, cultural and social contexts across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and the union territories. Despite these differences, he said, the Church is called to become a sign of unity rooted in God’s plan.
“God gives different gifts, talents and situations, yet God is also the one drawing us together,” Archbishop Rodrigues said, stressing that the Church has a special mission to promote “unity in diversity” both within the region and in the wider Indian context.
"Therefore, we are urged to work for unity in diversity. This is God’s will for us, and I think we have a very special role to play in this particular field. In India also, we appreciate the great diversity that we have, and yet we stay united together."
Addressing the growing challenges faced by migrants and vulnerable communities in urban centres such as Mumbai, the Archbishop highlighted the work of the Migrant Commission of the Archdiocese of Bombay. He explained that the Church has adopted a collaborative approach, choosing to coordinate with existing efforts rather than duplicate services.
He particularly acknowledged the contribution of religious men and women engaged in migrant ministry, assisting people with documentation, employment support and guidance through various hardships. He also pointed to initiatives in the Archdiocese of Bangalore, where centres and shelters have been established for migrants and persons in distress, suggesting that similar models could further strengthen pastoral outreach in Bombay.
Speaking about the Church’s engagement with young people and professionals in an increasingly secular and economically driven society, Archbishop Rodrigues expressed confidence in the active participation of the laity. He observed that many young people are eager to dedicate their talents and time to social concerns and community-building initiatives.
The Archdiocese, he noted, has also introduced training programmes in which professionals mentor and guide young people, helping form communities that are outward-looking and committed to the welfare of society.
Looking to the future, Archbishop Rodrigues identified ongoing formation as one of the Church’s most urgent priorities. He stressed that formation is essential at every level — for children, youth, adults, priests and religious — enabling believers to deepen their faith while also developing leadership skills and social responsibility.
He further underlined the importance of collaboration with people of goodwill from other faith traditions, especially those connected with Catholic institutions and committed to promoting shared human values.
“We must work together with them,” he said, expressing hope that the coming years would see stronger partnerships in evangelisation, interreligious dialogue, leadership formation and social transformation across Western India.
