Vailankanni Shrine: A Beacon of Hope for Millions of Pilgrims says Vatican

Tamil Nadu, August 7, 2024: Ahead of the Feast of Our Lady of Health on September 8, Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith has conveyed Pope Francis' profound appreciation for the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Good Health in Vailankanni, Tamil Nadu. The Cardinal’s letter, dated August 1, approved by Pope Francis and addressed to Bishop-elect Sagayaraj Thamburaj of Tanjore Diocese highlights the spiritual fruits experienced by the shrine’s numerous pilgrims, including those of non-Christian faiths.

Cardinal Fernández commended the shrine’s deep spiritual impact, noting that many visitors, regardless of their religious background, find solace and healing there. “This should not be seen as syncretism,” he emphasized, “but rather as a manifestation of Mary’s welcoming presence and the Lord’s love.” He explained that even those who do not partake in Catholic sacraments can still experience comfort through Mary’s intercession.

Reflecting on his audience with Pope Francis, Cardinal Fernández shared that the Pope values the popular piety displayed by pilgrims at Vailankanni, considering it a testament to the Church’s living faith. The Holy Father extends his paternal blessing to all who visit the shrine in anticipation of the feast.

The shrine’s origins trace back to the 16th century, when the Virgin Mary is said to have first appeared in Vailankanni to a young man carrying milk, asking him to offer it to the Child she held. Miraculously, the milk remained in his container after he complied. Cardinal Fernández highlighted this as a symbol of generosity, emphasizing that even in poverty, one can still give. He encouraged people to share and support those in need, noting that Mary values the generosity of her children.

Cardinal Fernández concluded by emphasizing that the devotion to Mary at Vailankanni goes beyond physical healing, touching the soul and offering peace and hope through her maternal gaze.
