Tamil Nadu Catholics Launch First Daily Digital Newspaper

Chennai, August 16, 2025: A long-cherished dream of Catholics in Tamil Nadu became a reality on Thursday, as Nam Vazhvu, the official Catholic weekly of the Tamil Nadu Catholic Church, marked its Golden Jubilee by launching its first daily e-newspaper.

Established in 1975, Nam Vazhvu has been a significant voice for the Catholic community in the state. Its Golden Jubilee is being celebrated not only by reflecting on its five-decade legacy but also by taking a decisive step into the digital era. Under the motto, “With a sharp-edged revolution, let us build a refined world!”, the publication now delivers fresh, timely news directly to inboxes and social media feeds every day.

The four-page daily edition will feature:

  • Updates from the Vatican and events involving Pope Francis.
  • News from Asia, India, and the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council.
  • Reports on the rights of Christian minorities, globally and locally.
  • Diocesan highlights and inspiring Church activities.
  • Coverage of pilgrim centres and shrine events.

The e-newspaper will be shared widely online, making it accessible to Catholics around the world.

Archbishop George Antonysamy, President of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council, described the launch as “truly commendable,” stating, “By launching an e-newspaper in its Jubilee year, Nam Vazhvu shows it understands the signs of the times and is making its mark in digital technology. The goal is to inspire young people to read more and to help them clearly understand the Church’s social and political mission.”

Bishop Lourdes Anand, Chairman of the Nam Vazhvu Publishing Board, remarked, “Through this initiative, news will instantly reach the Christian community and today’s youth via social media—news about the Church, society, minority political journeys, our demands, and our voice for rights. May it unite everyone in seeking truth, taking bold action, and renewing the Church, the world, and the nation.”

Editor-in-Chief Rev. Fr Rajasekaran expressed gratitude to Archbishop Antonysamy for his permission and encouragement, and to Bishop Lourdes Anand for his guidance in making the milestone possible.

The publication has invited readers, especially young people, to contribute by sending photos and reports of social, spiritual, and political events to namvazhvu.enewspaper@gmail.com or via WhatsApp on 8248411795.

The Golden Jubilee has not only celebrated 50 years of Nam Vazhvu but also heralded a new era of Catholic journalism in Tamil Nadu.
