October 4, 2025: Over 800 years ago, a young man from Assisi surprised the world by giving up everything, including his wealth, his comfort, and even his family’s approval, to live a life of radical simplicity. That man was St. Francis of Assisi. He traded fine clothes for a rough tunic, feasts for fasting, and ambition for humility. Despite living in the 13th century, Francis’ message still feels remarkably relevant today. He is more than a Catholic saint; he is a voice that speaks to every heart. Here is why.
1. He saw creation as family
Francis did not just admire nature, he embraced it as family. He called the sun Brother, the moon Sister, and treated animals as companions in praising God. In today’s world, facing climate change and environmental destruction, his outlook is especially relevant. Francis challenges us to stop treating the earth as disposable and to see it as a home that we all share.
2. He chose peace when others chose war
During the Crusades, Francis walked into the camp of Sultan al-Kamil unarmed, vulnerable, but courageous. He went not to argue but to understand. In a modern world divided by conflict and intolerance, his example is revolutionary. Peace is not weakness, but a bold and courageous choice.
3. He embraced the people society rejected
Francis kissed the wounds of lepers when others fled in disgust. He chose to live among beggars rather than nobles. Today, as the world faces refugees, homelessness, and marginalisation, Francis reminds us that every person carries dignity. His life asks us to see Christ in those who are often forgotten.
4. He showed that less can mean more
When Francis removed his rich garments in the town square, many thought he was mad. Yet he discovered a joy that riches could never provide. In a world dominated by consumerism and digital distraction, his simplicity is a refreshing lesson. Happiness comes not from possessions but from the depth of our love and compassion.
5. He belonged to everyone
Although Francis was deeply rooted in Christian faith, his message crosses boundaries. Environmentalists see him as a model for caring for the planet. Peacemakers view him as a symbol of dialogue. Animal lovers honour him as a patron of all creatures. His life demonstrates that humility, respect, and compassion are universal values.
6. He lived what he preached
Francis did not just speak about following Christ; he lived it completely. He bore the stigmata, the wounds of Jesus, in his own body. Even for those outside Christianity, his example is inspiring. True change occurs when belief is turned into action, and integrity is shown through daily choices.
7. He speaks directly to today’s crises
Although he lived in the 13th century, Francis’ concerns resonate with modern challenges. He spoke to issues such as care for the environment, service to the poor, and rejection of violence. His life continues to remind us to slow down, live gently, seek peace, and honour the dignity of all living things.
A voice that still echoes
St. Francis of Assisi was called the little poor man, yet his voice has never been small. He continues to resonate across religions, nations, and cultures because his message is profoundly human. He shows that peace is possible, joy is simple, and creation is sacred. Eight centuries later, he remains a saint for every heart.
