Visakhapatnam, September 27, 2025 – In a remarkable demonstration of community spirit and environmental stewardship, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy, Visakhapatnam Province, have set a new World Record by creating an astounding 1,190,796 seed balls in just one hour. The record-breaking effort, carried out across multiple venues, brought together students, teachers, and volunteers from 16 schools and colleges, showcasing the power of collective action in protecting the planet.
The initiative formed a central part of the congregation’s 375th jubilee celebrations. Founded in 1650 by Fr. Jean-Pierre Médaille in Le Puy-en-Velay, France, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy have long championed holistic education, community service, and compassionate outreach. By dedicating their jubilee to a large-scale environmental project, the congregation highlighted its enduring commitment to tackling climate change and fostering ecological responsibility among young people.
Each seed ball produced during the initiative carries a purpose beyond symbolism. They are set to be distributed in forested areas, providing vital nutrition to wildlife and aiding the regeneration of natural habitats. Every single seed ball represents the potential for new life, contributing to healthier ecosystems and long-term environmental sustainability.
The project also served as a “living classroom,” offering participants hands-on experience in sustainability, conservation, and teamwork. Students and volunteers gained practical insights into environmental protection while participating in a globally recognised achievement.
“This is more than a world record; it is a milestone in environmental education and social responsibility,” said a spokesperson from the congregation. “By turning our jubilee into a platform for planetary care, we hope to inspire future generations to understand that small actions can grow into a forest of change.”
The record-setting initiative reflects a visionary approach: combining celebration with meaningful action. It demonstrates how faith-based communities can mobilise young people for positive change, leaving a legacy that is both tangible and inspirational.
As the seed balls find their way into forests, they will continue to nourish wildlife, restore habitats, and remind all of us that even modest efforts, when multiplied by thousands, can make a global impact. The Sisters of St. Joseph of Annecy have not only commemorated 375 years of service but have also sown the seeds for a greener, more sustainable future.
