During the Second World War, he worked while secretly pursuing his studies and participating in an underground seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1946 and later served as a bishop and archbishop before becoming a cardinal.

Becoming Pope and Proclaiming Hope

On 16 October 1978, Karol Wojtyła was elected pope, taking the name John Paul II. He became the first non-Italian pope in more than four centuries.

His papacy was marked by an extraordinary commitment to evangelisation and international travel. He visited countries across the world, meeting communities, strengthening local churches and encouraging young people to embrace their faith.

His memorable message, “Be not afraid,” became a defining expression of his ministry, inviting people to trust Christ amid uncertainty and hardship.

A Champion of Human Dignity and Peace

Saint John Paul II consistently defended the dignity of every human person, emphasising the value of human life, freedom and solidarity. His experiences under Nazi occupation and communist rule shaped his concern for religious liberty and the rights of individuals.

He also played an important moral and spiritual role in the changes that transformed Eastern Europe, particularly through his encouragement of the Polish people and support for freedom.

In 1981, he survived an assassination attempt in St. Peter’s Square. He later visited his attacker in prison and publicly offered forgiveness, demonstrating his commitment to mercy and reconciliation.

Teachings, Legacy and Canonisation

John Paul II wrote numerous encyclicals and other important Church documents, addressing subjects such as faith, morality, family life and the relationship between Christianity and modern society. He also established World Youth Day as a major international gathering of young Catholics.

After his death on 2 April 2005, devotion to him spread widely. Pope Francis canonised him on 27 April 2014, alongside Pope John XXIII.

What Catholics Can Learn from Saint John Paul II

His life encourages Catholics to remain courageous in times of difficulty, forgive those who hurt them and serve others with compassion. He reminds believers that prayer, trust in God and respect for human dignity can guide everyday decisions.

His devotion to the Virgin Mary, expressed through his motto Totus Tuus (“Totally Yours”), also highlights the importance of Marian devotion in his spiritual life.

Why Saint John Paul II Still Matters

Saint John Paul II continues to inspire people through his teachings on faith, hope, forgiveness and peace. His example reminds the faithful that holiness is not simply about words but about living the Gospel through love, sacrifice and service.
