Twelve years ago, on March 13, 2013, I stood amidst a sea of nearly one hundred thousand people in St. Peter's Basilica square, Vatican, eagerly awaiting the iconic white smoke signaling the election of a new pope.
I was also privileged to stand at the same place in April 2005, when Pope Benedict XVI was elected, to see the white smoke and the announcement.
As the name of the newly elected pontiff echoed through the air on that rainy evening, I must admit that I was unfamiliar with Jorge Cardinal Mario Bergoglio, now famously known as Pope Francis.
However, over the past decade, he has evolved into an inspirational figure for many.
Pope Francis was a global leader who left a lasting impact on humanity. His tireless advocacy for the poor, the environment, and social justice inspired people of all faiths and backgrounds. Through his writings and actions, he promoted:
- Environmental stewardship: His encyclical Laudato Si' called for global action to protect the planet and address climate change.
- Compassion and empathy: He reached out to marginalized communities, advocating for their rights and dignity.
- Interfaith dialogue: He fostered greater understanding and cooperation among different faith traditions, promoting peace and harmony.
As a champion of humanity, Pope Francis' legacy extended beyond the Catholic Church, inspiring people worldwide to work towards a more just and compassionate world.
As a student at a university in the Vatican, I had the privilege of regularly attending Pope Francis' Wednesday audiences and occasionally Sunday Mass. He was a true shepherd who spoke from the heart, touching the hearts of all who listened.
Pope Francis' teachings have been the guiding light for my retreat and conference talks, nourishing the souls of many with his profound wisdom and spiritual depth.
Today, as he has been called to eternal life, I join millions around the globe in praying for the repose of his soul.
Yet I personally think, it will be right for me to pray, "Saint Pope Francis, pray for us...I believe he has already joined the chorus of saints..
