Chicalim, Goa, 8 June, 2025 – Regina Mundi School celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June with a vibrant and purpose-driven programme centred on this year’s global theme — Beat Plastic Pollution. The event brought together students, educators, environmentalists, and local leaders, reaffirming their shared commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.
The campus reflected a strong eco-conscious spirit with green-themed décor and creative displays. The celebration began with an eco-welcome to dignitaries, including Chief Guest Mr. Mahesh Kankonkar, Assistant Agriculture Officer from the Directorate of Agriculture, Mormugao. He was felicitated with a green token of appreciation. Also present were members of the Diocesan Commission for Ecology (DCE), the Chicalim Youth Farmers Club (CYFC), and Guest of Honour Rev. Dr. Bolmax Pereira, Convenor of DCE Goa and mentor to CYFC.
Students led an engaging assembly featuring an opening prayer, a collective pledge, and a thought-provoking presentation on the dangers of plastic pollution. Chaz Jhonson’s recital of the poem Plastic – Our Enemy added emotional weight to the theme.
Ms. Valisha Gama, newly appointed CYFC secretary, delivered an inspiring session titled That’s What We Do, highlighting youth-led farming and sustainability efforts. Her talk reinforced the idea that young people are already catalysts for environmental change.
Fr. Bolmax Pereira’s keynote address, You Are the Stewards, offered a compelling message on the moral and scientific responsibility of environmental care. His words encouraged students to live as faithful stewards of creation.
A major highlight was the launch of the DCE Almanac 2025, a year-long guide for schools and parishes, unveiled by Fr. Pereira and Headmaster Br. Shawn Viegas. DCE member Ms Mabel introduced its purpose and content.
Mr. Kankonkar’s session on monsoon vegetable cultivation energised students with practical tips on sack farming, container gardening, and composting. The presence of Mormugao ZAO Mr. Nilesh Vaigankar added to the event’s significance.
The day also included a poster competition on Beat Plastic Pollution and A Future Without Forests, and the awarding of Eco Warrior Badges to students for their environmental commitment.
A key development was the signing of an MoU between Regina Mundi School and CYFC to foster future green initiatives.
Eco Club Coordinator Ms. Alisha Pereira closed the event by urging every student to be an active agent of environmental change.
