According to the Associated Press, the solemn tone of this milestone marks a departure from the high-profile flamboyance that characterised his predecessor, Pope Francis. Instead, Leo has chosen a route of reflective calm, avoiding polemics and public grandstanding in favour of unity, peace, and renewed emphasis on church doctrine.

During a recent Holy Year celebration, for instance, the pope surprised tens of thousands of young Catholics by appearing in his popemobile in St. Peter’s Square, addressing the crowd in English, Spanish, and Italian. He called them the “salt of the Earth, the light of the world” and encouraged them to spread faith, hope and peace.

At the same time, Pope Leo has reinforced continuity with Pope Francis’s environmental legacy. He approved the construction of a solar farm north of Rome—designed to make Vatican City the world’s first carbon-neutral state—and furthered financial transparency reforms initiated under Francis.

Rooted in Augustinian spirituality, Leo frequently draws on themes of community, interior life, prayer and truth-seeking—values tied to his Augustinian background and his missionary service in Peru.
