Church Opens Canonisation Process for Veeramamunivar in Pondicherry

Pondicherry, August 17, 2025 – The Catholic Church in Pondicherry has marked a historic and grace-filled moment as Rev. Constantine Joseph Beschi, widely revered as Veeramamunivar, was officially declared a Servant of God. The solemn Eucharistic celebration took place on 3 August at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Pondicherry, and was presided over by Archbishop Francis Kalist of the Archdiocese of Pondicherry-Cuddalore.

Archbishop Kalist formally opened the diocesan process for Veeramamunivar’s cause of beatification and canonisation, expressing gratitude for his holy life and missionary zeal. This significant step was made possible following the Vatican’s issuance of the Nihil Obstat decree, confirming that there was no obstacle to commencing the process. Fr. Britto Vincent, Provincial of the Jesuits of Chennai, presented the decree, which was then solemnly proclaimed by the Archbishop.

The celebration concluded with the faithful uniting in prayer, seeking God’s blessing for Veeramamunivar’s eventual elevation to sainthood. On this occasion, Archbishop Kalist also released a new book, Veeramamunivar: A Life of Grace and Mission, authored by Fr. Maria Arul Raja, S.J. The publication aims to inspire the faithful by reflecting on Veeramamunivar’s virtuous life and enduring missionary legacy.

The event drew a large gathering of clergy, religious, and lay faithful, particularly from the Archdiocese of Pondicherry-Cuddalore, the Jesuit communities of Tamil Nadu, and parishes where Veeramamunivar had once carried out his mission. Their presence demonstrated the deep love and veneration that continues to surround his memory, underscoring his lasting influence as a witness to Christ and the Gospel.

The Church’s recognition of Veeramamunivar as a Servant of God marks the first formal step in the canonisation process. It highlights not only his role as a missionary but also his spiritual contribution to generations of the faithful.
