Pope Leo XIV Meets with Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the Vatican

Vatican City, May 20, 2025: Pope Leo XIV met with Colombian President Gustavo Petro Urrego during a private audience on Monday, May 19, at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, according to a statement issued by the Holy See Press Office. The meeting was held to reinforce the diplomatic and pastoral ties between the Vatican and Colombia.


Following the audience with the Holy Father, President Petro held further discussions with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See's Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations. The talks between the two parties were described as "cordial" by the Holy See and focused on strengthening the "positive and lasting collaboration between the Church and State in support of peace and reconciliation processes" in Colombia.


The conversations also addressed key issues concerning Colombia, including security, internal migration, and the impacts of climate change. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to tackling these challenges through continued mutual cooperation.


As is customary during such high-level visits, Pope Leo XIV and President Petro exchanged symbolic gifts, highlighting the respectful and diplomatic nature of the encounter.


President Petro had also attended the Mass of Inauguration for Pope Leo XIV the previous day, underscoring Colombia’s engagement with the new papacy.
