VATICAN, 24 May 2025: In anticipation of the 10th anniversary of Laudato si’, Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical, Pope Leo XIV has issued a heartfelt video message to a network of Universities for the Care of our Common Home, committed to ecological responsibility. The academic gathering, held at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, brought together institutions united in their dedication to environmental and social justice.
In his address, the Holy Father expressed deep gratitude for the network’s commitment to a synodal process of discernment as they prepare for COP30. He highlighted the significance of their collaborative reflection on the reconciliation between public debt and ecological debt—an idea first proposed by Pope Francis in his message for the World Day of Peace.
“We are united by the beautiful occasion of the 10th anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si’,” said Pope Leo XIV. “I know that you are engaging in a synodal work of discernment to prepare for COP30. You will reflect together on a possible reconciliation between public debt and ecological debt—a proposal Pope Francis suggested in his message for the World Day of Peace.”
He went on to emphasise the importance of this work within the context of the current jubilee year, which he described as “a year of hope.” The Pope commended the university professors for their mission to serve as builders of bridges between the Americas and the Iberian Peninsula, promoting ecological, social, and environmental justice.
“I thank you all for your efforts and your work,” Pope Leo XIV concluded. “I encourage you to keep building bridges.”
