Vatican City, December 8, 2025: Pope Leo XIV joined thousands of guests in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall on Saturday evening for the sixth “Concert with the Poor”, expressing joy at sharing in what he described as a divine gift accessible to everyone. The event brought together artists, volunteers, and more than 3,000 vulnerable and marginalised people of various nationalities, languages, and religions.
Organised by the Dicastery for the Service of Charity in collaboration with the Diocese of Rome and numerous groups that support the poor, this year’s concert featured international artist Michael Bublé, his band, the Choir of the Diocese of Rome led by Monsignor Marco Frisina, and the Nova Opera Orchestra.
Pope Leo sat throughout the performance, smiling, applauding enthusiastically after each song, and even joining in as Bublé led the audience in singing. He later expressed his gratitude for taking part in an event “born from the heart of Pope Francis.”
He emphasised music’s universal value, saying the melodies touched hearts and revealed its immense worth: “not a luxury for the few, but a divine gift accessible to everyone, rich and poor.”
A special joy
The Pope told the audience he felt “a special joy” in welcoming them, thanking them for their presence and acknowledging the concert’s intended beneficiaries. He expressed appreciation to the organisers and contributors, including Cardinal Vicar Baldo Reina, Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, and the many charitable associations that made the event possible.
He also offered heartfelt thanks to the performers, noting that their art and passion enriched the celebration.
Music as a spiritual bridge
Reflecting on the deeper meaning of music, Pope Leo said it acts as “a bridge that leads us to God.” He explained that music conveys emotions and the deepest stirrings of the soul, lifting people up and forming “an imaginary stairway connecting earth and heaven.”
He noted that music does not simply distract from suffering; instead, it reminds humanity of its true identity: “We are God’s beloved children — far more than our problems or our troubles.”
The Pope also stressed the link between music and Christmas, pointing out that the feast is universally rich in hymns and melodies. The Christmas Mystery, he said, could not be celebrated fully without music.
Preparing for Christ’s coming
As Advent progresses, Pope Leo encouraged all to prepare spiritually for the coming of Christ. He called on people to ensure their hearts remain free from selfishness and material distractions. Instead, he urged attentiveness to others — especially those in need — and openness to the “song of God’s love, which is Jesus Christ.”
“Jesus is God’s song of love for humanity,” he said. “Let us learn this song well, so that we may sing it with our lives.”
