Pope Francis Urges Vatican Communicators to Build Bridges, Not Walls

Vatican, October 31, 2024: In a profound address to the Vatican’s media professionals on October 29, Pope Francis underscored the crucial role of communication in fostering unity and compassion amid division and indifference. Speaking at the plenary assembly of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Communication, the Pope encouraged Vatican media to bridge divides, spotlight marginalized voices, and engage in stories that emphasize peace and justice, especially in a world marred by conflict and socio-economic inequality.

The Pope urged Church communicators to maintain their ecclesial identity, reminding them that their mission transcends political or business interests. “If we think and act by political or business standards, we are not the Church,” Pope Francis emphasized, highlighting the importance of avoiding bureaucratic detachment in favour of conveying the Church’s core values of compassion and community.

Expanding on his vision for Vatican communication, the Pope articulated his dream of “a form of communication that can connect people and cultures,” allowing stories from all corners of the globe to resonate authentically. He stressed the importance of focusing on the lives of the marginalized, migrants and victims of war, advocating for an inclusive approach to storytelling devoid of “slogans.”

Acknowledging the financial limitations faced by the Dicastery, Pope Francis encouraged a “creative and disciplined” approach, noting the challenge of expanding communications without increased funding. This necessity for resourcefulness, he suggested, should drive innovative methods in the digital space, expanding language offerings and embracing a synodal approach.

The Pope concluded by praising recent language additions to Vatican News such as Lingala, Mongolian and Kannada, expressing gratitude for Vatican Media’s preparations for the Jubilee Year 2025, ensuring participation for those unable to journey to Rome.
