Kottar Diocese Hosts Artists’ Camp at Newly Established Art and Heritage Centre

Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu, 25 Sept, 2025: The newly established Art and Heritage Centre of the Diocese of Kottar held its first major initiative, a three-day artists’ camp titled “Pilgrims of Hope: A New World in Colours,” from September 19 to 21 at the Bishop’s House, Kalari Campus, Nagercoil, under the guidance of its Director, Fr. A. Sahaya Belix. The initiative highlighted the essential role of art in nurturing faith, fostering cultural dialogue, and inspiring communities with visual expressions of hope.

Twenty Catholic artists from across Tamil Nadu participated in the camp, presenting paintings on themes of Faith, Hope, and New Frontiers.

The camp was inaugurated on 19 September by the Vicar General of the Diocese, Fr. T. John Rufus, who urged the artists to use their talents in the service of faith and hope. On the second day, 20 September, school and college students visited the camp, interacted with the artists, and gained insights into the creative process. They also received career guidance in art from Fr. A. Sahaya Belix. A highlight of the day was the visit of the Bishop Nazarene Soosai of Kottar , who delivered an inspiring address to both artists and students, emphasising that art is not only a career but also a vocation that builds values and hope in society.

The grand painting exhibition was inaugurated on 21 September in the presence of the Vicar General, Fr. T. John Rufus, the Procurator, Fr. J. Francis Xavier, and other distinguished guests, who offered blessings and encouragement to the artists. Bishop Nazarene Soosai visited the exhibition, admired the works on display, and personally commended the artists for their creative contributions. The celebrations were enriched by performances from the artists of the Kalari Folk Cultural Centre, who showcased traditional folk dances.

Addressing the gathering, Fr. A. Sahaya Belix underlined the transformative power of art to bridge faith and culture. Certificates were awarded to all participating artists by the Vicar General, after which visitors spent time admiring the paintings and appreciating their beauty and strong expressions of Christian faith.

The camp not only celebrated artistic talent but also demonstrated how creativity can deepen spiritual life and build bridges across cultures. By uniting faith and imagination, the Diocese of Kottar reaffirmed its commitment to shaping a society where art serves as a beacon of hope and renewal.
