Innovative Catechetical Initiatives Launched to Strengthen Faith in Children

Chennai, September 16, 2024: Under the guidance of Archbishop Dr. George Antonyswamy of Madras-Mylapore, the Catechetical Commission of the archdiocese has introduced innovative initiatives to deepen the faith of children. These new practices are designed to enhance spiritual development from baptism to first Holy Communion.

The commission has rolled out four distinctive "Para-Sacraments" to engage children at various stages of their religious education. These ceremonies, which take place during Sunday Mass or on special feast days, are intended to foster a deeper connection to faith and involve family participation.

For Pre-KG children, a special event in January allows them to express their faith through recitations, songs, or acting, with the addition of festive elements like chocolates and popular characters to create a welcoming environment.

First graders receive a metal cross with significant scripture inscribed on it, which has also gained popularity among adults. This "lifetime cross" is blessed and worn by both children and parishioners, accompanied by an explanation of its theological meaning.

In the third grade, children are presented with a wooden rosary and a leather pouch, and parents are invited to pledge support for their children's prayer life by initiating family prayers.

For fifth graders, the commission provides their first Bible, either in English or Tamil, along with a note encouraging daily reading of Scripture. This initiative aligns with their development of reading skills and aims to integrate Bible study into their daily routines.

These Para-Sacraments have been warmly received over the past year, with positive feedback from the community and neighboring dioceses. The Catechetics Commission is hopeful that these initiatives will continue to inspire and reach more families, contributing to the spiritual growth of young Catholics.
