Ahmedabad, March 8 2026: In one of the most remarkable comeback stories in recent cricket history, Sanju Samson led India to victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, delivering match-winning performances throughout the tournament and finishing as the Player of the Tournament.
India sealed the title with a dominant 96-run victory over the New Zealand national cricket team in the final, after posting a massive 255/5. Samson played a crucial role in the title clash, smashing 89 off 46 balls, including 5 fours and 8 sixes, setting the tone for India’s commanding win.
The innings not only powered India to the trophy but also became the highest individual score in a men’s T20 World Cup final, marking a historic moment for the Kerala-born wicketkeeper-batter.
A Tournament to Remember
Samson’s campaign in the tournament was nothing short of extraordinary. Despite playing only five matches, he finished among the top run-scorers.
Tournament statistics:
• Matches: 5
• Innings: 5
• Runs: 321
• Average: 80.25
• Strike rate: ~199
• Highest score: 97*
• 50+ scores: 3
• Fours: 27
• Sixes: 24
His aggressive batting saw him smash 24 sixes, the most in a single T20 World Cup edition, underlining his fearless approach throughout the competition.
Three Knockout Masterclasses
What truly defined Samson’s tournament was his consistency in high-pressure games.
In a crucial Super 8 clash against the West Indies cricket team, Samson delivered a breathtaking 97 off 50 balls*, hitting 12 fours and 4 sixes as India successfully chased 196 to secure a place in the semi-finals.
He followed that with another brilliant innings against the England national cricket team in the semi-final. Samson scored 89 off 42 balls, helping India reach 253/7. India eventually held their nerve to win a thrilling contest by 7 runs.
In the final, he once again rose to the occasion with 89 off 46 balls against New Zealand, completing a remarkable run of three consecutive 50+ scores in knockout matches.
From the Bench to the Spotlight
One of the most inspiring aspects of Samson’s story is that he did not play the early matches of the tournament. Initially on the bench, he was brought into the playing XI later in the competition.
When the opportunity came, he grabbed it with both hands, transforming India’s batting line-up and emerging as the defining player of the tournament.
His journey reflects years of perseverance and belief despite setbacks.
Samson’s Emotional Words After the Final
Speaking after receiving the Player of the Tournament award, Samson shared the emotional journey behind his success.
"Feels like a dream. Very happy and grateful. Out of words, out of emotions. [On his three fifties, thought process] To be honest, it started one-two years before. When I was in the 2024 World Cup team where I didn't play, I kept visualising, kept on working and this was exactly what I wanted to do. After the NZ series I was broken, my dreams were completely shattered. And I was thinking what can I do. But God had different plans. And I was rewarded for being brave enough to dream. A lot of former players have reached out to me and tried to help me out. For the last couple of months, I have been in constant contact with Sachin Tendulkar. I reached out to him and had big big conversations with him. Getting a guidance from someone like him, what more can you ask for? I am very grateful for everyone who supported me. [What more does he want to achieve?] This itself is very big for me, I want to enjoy it right now and then after a few day will figure out what more to do."
A Moment That Defines a Career
Those Samson innings will forever define this World Cup.
From being overlooked in earlier stages to becoming the hero of India’s title run, Samson’s journey is a powerful reminder of perseverance, faith, and the courage to keep dreaming.
For his fans and him, this tournament was not just about runs or records — it was about a dream finally fulfilled on the biggest stage in cricket.
