Durg/Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh | July 26, 2025: Following the detention of two Catholic nuns and a young man at Durg Railway Station on July 25, latest information reveals that the parents of the three tribal girls involved had given full consent for their daughters to travel for employment.
The girls, aged between 19 and 22, were travelling from their village to work at a Catholic-run hospital in Agra. Early today, a support team made several attempts to arrange transportation to bring the parents from their village in Narayanpur district to Durg - a journey of three to four hours. With no public vehicles available, a taxi was arranged.
As the group was preparing to travel to Durg, local police called and asked them to report to the station. The officer in charge issued a letter and deputed a constable to accompany them. The Superintendent of Police (SP) helped coordinate their travel and advised the team on the legal steps ahead, recommending that an advocate be consulted to manage the case.
The previous day, the parents had submitted written statements and identification documents confirming that the girls had travelled with their consent.
The incident began when the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) at Durg Railway Station questioned the girls over the lack of platform tickets. After they explained they were travelling with the nuns for work, the TTE informed members of Bajrang Dal, who arrived at the station and accused the nuns of attempted religious conversion and trafficking. Despite no immediate evidence, the group demanded swift action, and the nuns and the young man were taken into custody. The girls are currently under the care of the Women Welfare Committee in Durg.
Church representatives have since informed the District Collector and met with the Women’s Welfare Department. The girls' parents, along with the village head, have collected supporting documents—including a letter from the police and local leadership—to present in Durg.
The nuns remain in judicial custody as the legal process continues. Community leaders have called for a fair review of the facts and reiterated the importance of due process.
