New Delhi, June 13, 2026: The Indian Air Force (IAF) was struck by tragedy on Saturday, 13 June, when an Antonov An-32 transport aircraft crashed during a landing attempt at Jorhat Air Force Station in Assam, killing five personnel and leaving another injured. The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by India’s military aviation crews and the long operational history of the An-32 fleet.
The aircraft, which was carrying personnel and equipment, met with disaster while attempting to land at the air base. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, with the IAF initiating a formal Court of Inquiry to determine the circumstances that led to the accident.
The tragedy has left the nation mourning five members of the Indian Air Force who lost their lives while performing their duties.
The Indian Air Force confirmed that five personnel died in the crash:
Among those on board, the co-pilot survived the crash and was taken for medical treatment. Reports indicated that he was the only survivor of the accident, while rescue teams worked to secure the crash site and recover those involved.
The loss of the two Agniveer Vayu personnel also highlighted the dangers faced by young recruits who serve alongside experienced officers in operational roles. Their sacrifice has been remembered as a reminder that military service carries extraordinary responsibility and risk.
The Antonov An-32 has been a vital part of India’s military transport capability for decades. Designed originally in the Soviet Union, the aircraft was introduced into Indian service in the 1980s and became an important platform for transporting troops, supplies and equipment across challenging terrains.
However, the aircraft has also been involved in several accidents over its operational history. According to reports, there have been multiple An-32 crashes since its induction, resulting in the deaths of more than 100 personnel.
The aircraft’s importance has been especially significant in difficult environments such as the Himalayan region, where the IAF relies on transport aircraft to maintain connectivity with remote military locations.
Despite upgrades and maintenance programmes over the years, the ageing fleet has continued to face scrutiny regarding safety and replacement requirements.
The Jorhat crash has therefore renewed discussions about modernising India’s military transport aviation capabilities.
Following the crash, the IAF announced that investigators would examine every aspect of the incident, including technical conditions, weather factors, aircraft maintenance records and operational procedures.
Military aviation experts caution that it is too early to draw conclusions before the inquiry is completed. Aircraft accidents often involve multiple contributing factors, and a detailed investigation is essential to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Court of Inquiry will be expected to provide clarity not only for the armed forces but also for the families of those who lost their lives.
For the families of Squadron Leader Prashant Singh, Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniveer Vayu Khemaram Kumawat and Agniveer Vayu Danish Alam, the loss represents a devastating personal tragedy.
Behind every uniform is a family, a community and a story of sacrifice. These personnel were not only members of the Indian Air Force but also sons, brothers, colleagues and friends who dedicated their lives to serving the nation.
Their final mission ended in tragedy, but their commitment to duty remains honoured by the country they served.
The Jorhat An-32 crash is a painful reminder of the risks undertaken daily by India’s armed forces. While the immediate priority remains supporting the injured, assisting the grieving families and completing a transparent investigation, the incident also raises wider questions about the future of India’s military transport fleet.
The sacrifice of these five IAF personnel must inspire renewed efforts towards aviation safety, technological upgrades and ensuring that those who defend the nation operate with the safest possible equipment.
As the investigation continues, India stands united in remembering the five brave individuals whose service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.
