Belgaum, March 17, 2025 – The Diocese of Belgaum commemorated International Women’s Day with grand celebrations across its parishes, mission stations, and institutions. The events, held on March 8 and 9, honoured the contributions of women from the diocese to the Church and society. The celebrations were marked by Holy Masses, cultural programmes, and social awareness initiatives. Led by clergy, religious leaders, and pastoral teams, the celebrations reinforced the empowerment and invaluable role of women in faith and community life.
The Belgaum Deanery marked the occasion with a solemn Holy Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Family Rosary, coordinated by Mr. Ryan Gomes. The liturgy highlighted the essential role of women, with prayers and a message of appreciation. Similarly, Divine Mercy Parish, Hunchanhatti, held an evening Mass followed by cultural performances and games, coordinated by Sr. Carmeline.
In the Khanapur Deanery, the highlight was the Eucharistic celebration at Milagres Church, Khanapur, presided over by Bishop Derek Fernandes. Women actively participated in the liturgy, and a cultural program followed to recognise their contributions. Celebrations also took place in Gundoli, where the community gathered to reflect on the impact of women in the Church.
The Hubli Deanery saw parishioners at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Parish, Dharwad, participate in a Eucharistic celebration and activities promoting unity among women. At St. Joseph’s High School, Dharwad, Fr. Michael Souz and the male staff of the school hosted a gathering, with Mrs. Clara Fernandes, Secretary of the Regional Laity Commission, as the chief guest. Cultural performances during the gathering honoured the contributions of women in various fields.
In the Bagalkot Deanery, Arogya Matha Mission, Jamkhandi, and Assisi Anugraha Trust organised programmes emphasising empowerment, education, and self-sustainability. Celebrations at St. Mary’s Church, Bagalkot, featured a candlelight procession, an insightful talk by Mr. S.A. Swamy, cultural performances, and a fellowship meal.
The Chandgad Deanery witnessed large-scale celebrations at St. Anthony’s Church, Adkur, where a day-long programme at Carmel Ashish Convent High School gathered 150 women for Mass, interactive sessions, and a cultural evening. Bishop Fernandes delivered an inspiring address, while guest speakers, including Dr. Benita Dias and Advocate Julie Fernandes, shed light on various social issues concerning women.
In the Chikodi Deanery, Sacred Heart Church, Gokak Falls, and St. Michael’s Church, Hidkal Dam, hosted special Eucharistic celebrations, cultural programs, and discussions on the role of women in families and communities.
At Sarva Vidya Deepa Bailhongal Social Work Unit, Nesargi, over 900 women participated in a grand event led by Fr. Richard D’Almeida SVD and Fr. Ezekiel Rakesh SVD. Notably, 104 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) accumulated Rs. 1.08 crore in savings and bank loans over five years, showcasing significant financial empowerment.
The Diocese of Belgaum’s International Women’s Day celebrations served as a fitting tribute to the contributions of women from the diocese. Through Masses, cultural programmes, and social empowerment initiatives, the Diocese reaffirmed its dedication to recognising and uplifting the role of women in both the Church and society.
