Chhattisgarh Nuns Case: Women’s Commission Demands FIR Against Right-Wing Activists for 'Harassment’

Durg,Chhattisgarh, 10 October 2025: The Chhattisgarh State Women’s Commission has urged the state police to file an FIR against right-wing activists who allegedly threatened, sexually harassed, and abused three women from Narayanpur district and two nuns at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station in Durg on 25 July.

Bajrang Dal workers had accused the nuns of human trafficking and forcibly converting the three women, although the women maintained that the nuns were only assisting them in securing employment. Following the allegations, police filed an FIR and arrested the nuns, who were later released on bail on 2 August after spending several days in jail.

Kiranmayee Nayak, chairperson of the State Women’s Commission, told The Indian Express, “We took three hearings in the matter, but we have not received an appropriate response from government officials. We had asked them to furnish CCTV camera footage from the Durg Railway Police station, which shows the Bajrang Dal workers harassing the women inside the police station. On Thursday, we wrote a letter to the DGP, asking for an FIR to be registered against the right-wing workers named by the three women in their individual complaints to us.”

Nayak added that if police fail to act within 15 days, she plans to escalate the matter to the National Human Rights Commission and seek compensation for the women for the authorities’ inaction.

The three women expressed satisfaction at the Commission’s intervention, adding that the incident caused them to lose the employment opportunity the nuns were helping them secure, creating financial difficulties.

The arrest of the nuns on 25 July sparked widespread outrage, particularly in Kerala, their home state. Christian groups, the Congress, and Kerala’s ruling Left alliance strongly criticised the arrests. Multiple videos from inside the GRP station went viral on social media.

Following the incident, the women were initially placed in a shelter before being allowed to return home to Narayanpur. They subsequently filed a complaint with the Narayanpur police against the right-wing activists but were asked to approach the Durg district authorities since the alleged crime had occurred there. In August, the women then brought the matter to the State Women’s Commission.
