Archbishop Joseph Pamplany Appointed As Vicar Of Major Archbishop For Ernakulam-Angamaly Archdiocese

New Delhi, January 11, 2025: His Beatitude Mar Raphael Thattil, the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, appointed Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplany as the Vicar of the Major Archbishop for the Archeparchy of Emakulam-Angamaly on January 11, 2025. The appointment followed Archbishop Pamplany’s election during the First Session of the XXXIII Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church, held from January 6 to 11, 2025, at Mount St. Thomas, Kakkanad. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, confirmed the election, solidifying Archbishop Pamplany’s new role while he continues serving as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tellicherry.

The development also marks a transition in the governance of the Archeparchy. Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Bishop Mar Bosco Puthur, who served as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archeparchy of Emakulam-Angamaly since December 7, 2023. Mar Puthur had submitted his resignation in September 2024, citing health concerns. With the resignation accepted, the Apostolic See has entrusted the governance of the Archeparchy to Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Cyril Vasil SJ will continue to function as the Pontifical Delegate for the Archeparchy. The Synod’s decision and the subsequent confirmations reflect ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership within the Syro-Malabar Church, ensuring stability and continuity in its administration.
