Mumbai, June 12, 2026 : The Catholic community in Mumbai is grappling with grief, concern, and a renewed determination to defend the city’s long-standing tradition of religious harmony following a series of vandalism incidents targeting Christian sacred sites.
Mumbai’s Catholics Call for Justice After Desecration of Sacred Christian Symbols
The latest act of desecration, involving a statue of Jesus Christ in Worli on 7 June 2026, has sparked outrage among parishioners, Church leaders, and civil society groups, prompting urgent appeals for justice and stronger protection of places of worship.
In a strongly worded statement, the Archdiocese of Bombay expressed its “deep concern and unequivocal condemnation” of what it described as deliberate attacks on sacred Christian symbols. The incidents have raised troubling questions about communal harmony in India’s financial capital and have left many believers wondering how such acts could occur in a city celebrated for its diversity and coexistence.
A Disturbing Pattern of Vandalism
The desecration of the Jesus statue in Worli did not occur in isolation. It followed an earlier incident in which a roadside Cross near a church in Andheri was vandalised and damaged. According to Church leaders, these repeated attacks suggest a worrying pattern rather than random acts of mischief.
“The Archdiocese of Bombay wishes to place on record its deep concern and unequivocal condemnation of the recent acts of deliberate vandalism against sacred Christian sites within the city of Mumbai,” stated Fr Nigel Barrett, spokesperson for the Archdiocese.
He warned that these incidents are “not isolated acts of mischief” but rather “targeted attacks on the religious sentiments of an entire community and a direct assault on the spirit of peaceful coexistence that has long defined this great city.”
For many Catholics, the damage goes beyond physical destruction. The affected statues and crosses are cherished symbols of faith that have served generations of believers. They stand not merely as religious markers but as reminders of Mumbai’s rich Christian heritage, dating back centuries.
More Than Stone and Concrete
The Archdiocese stressed that sacred symbols carry profound spiritual significance for believers. Their desecration, Church leaders argue, wounds not only religious sentiments but also the broader social fabric.
“Sacred symbols are not mere objects. They are expressions of living faith,” the Archdiocese noted. “Their desecration wounds the hearts of believers and disturbs the conscience of every right-thinking citizen, regardless of creed or community.”
For Mumbai’s Catholic faithful, these symbols have long represented hope, prayer, and community identity. Many of the city’s roadside crosses, shrines, and statues are places where people pause daily to pray, seek comfort, or remember loved ones.
The emotional impact of seeing these sacred sites damaged has therefore been immense. Parishioners have described feelings of sadness, anger, and disbelief that such attacks could take place in a city renowned for its multicultural character.
A Community with Deep Roots
The Catholic community has been an integral part of Mumbai’s development for centuries. Through schools, hospitals, charitable institutions, and social service initiatives, Catholics have contributed significantly to the city’s growth and welfare.
Recognising this legacy, the Archdiocese emphasised that Mumbai’s Catholics have “for centuries, contributed peaceably and with abiding loyalty to the social, educational, and civic fabric of this city.”
Church leaders believe the recent attacks undermine not only the Christian community but also the values of pluralism and mutual respect that have historically defined Mumbai.
Calls for Immediate Action
In response to the incidents, the Archdiocese has called upon law enforcement agencies and government authorities to act swiftly and decisively.
The Church has urged the Mumbai Police to register First Information Reports (FIRs) without delay, conduct comprehensive investigations, and bring those responsible to justice.
“The Mumbai Police and the relevant law enforcement authorities” were specifically asked to “conduct a thorough investigation, and bring the perpetrators to swift and certain justice.”
At the same time, the Government of Maharashtra has been urged to treat the incidents with the seriousness they deserve under the law and to ensure the protection of all places of worship across the state.
The Archdiocese also appealed to community leaders and civil society organisations to speak out clearly against such acts, warning that “silence is not mistaken for consent.”
Faith Stronger Than Fear
Despite the pain caused by the attacks, Church leaders have sought to reassure the faithful that their commitment to faith and service remains unshaken.
“We wish to make clear that the Catholic community of Mumbai will not be intimidated,” the Archdiocese declared.
In one of the most powerful statements to emerge from the crisis, Fr Barrett affirmed: “Our faith is not diminished by the breaking of stone and concrete. We will continue to pray, to serve, and to stand in solidarity with all people of goodwill.”
These words have resonated deeply among Catholics across Mumbai, offering a message of resilience in the face of adversity.
A Hopeful Path Forward
The recent desecrations have undoubtedly left many Catholics hurt and anxious. Yet they have also prompted a renewed commitment to safeguarding Mumbai’s spirit of unity and mutual respect.
The Archdiocese’s appeal goes beyond seeking justice for the Christian community. It is a call to all citizens to defend the values that have made Mumbai one of India’s most diverse and welcoming cities.
As Fr Nigel Barrett poignantly observed, “An attack on one community’s sacred spaces is an attack on the idea of Mumbai itself.”
The hope now is that authorities will act decisively, perpetrators will be held accountable, and communities across faiths will stand together in rejecting hatred and intolerance.
For Mumbai’s Catholics, the path forward lies not in fear or division, but in faith, dialogue, and a shared commitment to preserving the city’s rich tradition of pluralism. In that spirit, many continue to pray that justice, peace, and understanding will prevail, ensuring that Mumbai remains a home where every community can worship freely and live without fear.
