Aizawl Diocese's Remarkable Journey from Vision to Renewal

August 1, 2026: Church renewal is often associated with large gatherings and major programmes. In the Diocese of Aizawl, however, renewal has quietly taken root through small groups of families who gather to pray, reflect on the Word of God, and grow together in faith.

Over the years, these Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) have become a source of hope and renewal, strengthening communion, participation, and mission across the diocese. Aizawl's journey shows how small communities can make a lasting impact on the life of the Church.

A Vision That Took Root

The growth of Basic Ecclesial Communities in the Diocese of Aizawl is the fruit of a shared vision embraced with faith, perseverance, and commitment. Rather than viewing BECs as simply another parish initiative, the diocese recognised them as small communities where people encounter Christ through Scripture, prayer, fellowship, and service. This understanding gradually transformed parish life and encouraged greater participation among the faithful.

Walking with the People

A key force behind this transformation has been the dedicated service of the Diocesan Animation Team (DAT). Travelling across parishes and remote villages, the team has tirelessly accompanied priests and lay faithful, helping them understand and live the BEC vision.

Through regular preaching, formation programmes, and personal interaction, the DAT encouraged communities to gather around the Word of God and grow together in faith. Their patient accompaniment has enabled many families to experience the Church not only as a place they visit, but as a community they actively belong to.

Leadership That Inspired a Diocese

The movement has been further strengthened by the pastoral leadership of Bishop Most Rev. Stephen Rotluanga. His directive encouraging every parish priest to establish Basic Ecclesial Communities gave the diocese a clear and unified direction.

He also encouraged every parish to dedicate the second Sunday evening of each month to BEC prayer and meetings. This simple yet meaningful practice has fostered a spirit of prayer, reflection, and fellowship, strengthening relationships within communities and deepening the faith of countless families.

Communities Growing in Faith

Today, the fruits of this journey are clearly visible. The Diocese of Aizawl has established 104 BEC units, with 14 of its 24 parishes nurturing active and vibrant communities. Even in parishes with a smaller Catholic population, sincere efforts continue to establish BEC units suited to local realities.

Throughout this journey, the Diocesan Animation Team has remained a constant source of encouragement, patiently accompanying communities as they continue to grow in faith and unity.

Strengthening the Journey Through Formation

Recognising that lasting renewal requires ongoing formation, the diocese has made key BEC resources available in the local language. The translation of the Developing Indian Integral Pastoral Approach (DIIPA) Introductory Workshop into Mizo has enabled priests, religious, and lay leaders to better understand and implement the BEC vision.

The DIIPA Book, published by the National Service Team for SCCs (NST), CBCI, and compiled by the National Resource Team (NRT), provides the foundational understanding and formation needed for BEC Animators. The diocese has also drafted a BEC constitution to guide every community—from the grassroots to the diocesan level—promoting unity, accountability, and shared responsibility.

In addition, the ongoing Mizo translation of Our Journey Together reflects the diocese's commitment to ensuring that every member has access to resources that nurture spiritual growth and strengthen the journey of faith.

The Diocese of Aizawl reminds us that meaningful renewal often begins quietly—in homes where families gather to pray, in communities that listen to the Word of God together, and in people who choose to walk with one another in faith.

Today, its growing network of Basic Ecclesial Communities stands as a beacon of hope, demonstrating how patient accompaniment, strong pastoral leadership, and committed formation can transform the life of a local Church. Rooted in the Gospel and united in communion, participation, and mission, Aizawl continues to inspire others with a story of hope that is still unfolding.
