AI’s Potential in Church Ministry Highlighted in Udupi Diocese

Udupi, September 19, 2024: The Commission for Social Communications of Udupi Diocese organized a workshop titled "AI and Church: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Enhanced Pastoral Ministry," on September 18 at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Anugraha, in Udupi. The event, attended by 45 participants including priests, religious leaders and media mentors, focused on how AI could transform pastoral ministry by improving communication, outreach and spiritual guidance within the Church. Led by prominent AI professionals, the workshop explored various tools and platforms that could streamline Church activities and enhance engagement in the digital age.


Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo Udupi underscored the importance of integrating AI into the Church’s pastoral work, urging participants to embrace technological advancements to reach a broader audience and provide personalized spiritual care. Fr. Denis D'Sa, , Director of the Commission for Social Communications highlighted AI’s growing relevance in various sectors and stressed its potential in advancing the Church’s mission


Renowned AI experts Fr. Anil Ivan Fernandes, a Google-certified AI coach and Mr. Leo Victor Zalki, an AI mentor, led the sessions. They introduced several AI platforms such as Copilot, learnwitheleo.notion and leonardo.ai, that can assist in creating engaging content, optimizing resources and enhancing communication strategies. Participants engaged enthusiastically in discussions on the practical applications of these tools in pastoral work.


The workshop concluded with an interactive session, where participants explored the opportunities and challenges of AI in the Church. Fr. D'Sa emphasized the need for continuous learning and adaptation to ensure the Church remains relevant in the modern world.
