41 Naga Houses, Churches Burnt in Fresh Manipur Violence

KANGPOKPI, Manipur, September 25, 2026: At least 41 Naga houses, including churches, were reportedly burnt during nearly 12 hours of violence in the Makui area of Kangpokpi district, forcing residents to flee their villages.

Local sources said the violence began around 2.30 pm on September 23 and continued until about 2.30 am on September 24. The worst-affected settlements were Makui Chamriupui, Makui Thanamba and Makui Thebram, where 17, eight and 16 houses respectively were reportedly completely destroyed. Arson was also reported from the Naga villages of Langka, Kapningching and Tajeikaiphun.

Villagers said they initially attempted to remain in their homes but were forced to leave as houses were set ablaze. Displaced families reportedly moved towards Makui village and other temporary shelters.

Residents have questioned the security arrangements in the area, noting that CRPF and Indian Reserve Battalion personnel were reportedly stationed within about 10 km of some of the affected villages.

Local villagers alleged that Kuki militants were responsible for the attacks. The allegation has not been independently verified. Reports also indicated sporadic clashes between armed groups from the Kuki and Naga communities on September 24.

The number of casualties remains unclear. Security sources cited in reports said no casualties had been confirmed in connection with the arson, while local accounts reported continuing fighting in the area.

The burning of churches has added to the losses suffered by the affected Naga communities, where churches serve as places of worship as well as centres of community life.

The latest violence has renewed concerns over the safety of civilians in Kangpokpi, one of the areas affected by continuing ethnic tensions and armed clashes in Manipur. Displaced families now face the immediate challenge of securing shelter, food and other essential supplies while authorities assess the extent of the destruction.
