Mumbai, September 26, 2025: The Directors of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) from Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa gathered at Sarvodya, Mumbai, on Friday for their annual regional meeting.
The day opened with the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Archbishop John Rodrigues, setting a reflective tone for the sessions of sharing and planning that followed.
Fr. Sanjay Parkhe, Regional Coordinator, welcomed the participants warmly. In his keynote address, Archbishop Rodrigues highlighted the uncertainty and fragmentation that mark contemporary society, often resulting in disharmony. He urged BEC leaders to act as agents of peace across communities and encouraged diocesan directors and lay animators to persevere in their mission despite challenges.
The first session featured Fr. George Palakaparambil, National Coordinator, who underscored the need for effective structures within BECs. “Unless there is systematic organisation, BECs cannot become effective,” he stressed, pointing to the value of proper formation and leadership.
In the second session, Sr. Jennifer addressed the responsibilities of diocesan directors. She offered practical insights and guidance on leadership, equipping participants with strategies to enhance their pastoral work.
The afternoon focused on diocesan reports, where directors presented their experiences, accomplishments, and challenges. The discussions also served as a platform for collaborative planning, with participants outlining strategies to strengthen the mission of BECs in the Western Region.
The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from Fr. Chrysler, who expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the day’s success.
The annual gathering reaffirmed the Western Region’s commitment to building vibrant, faith-filled, and participatory Basic Ecclesial Communities, rooted in service and unity.
