At a time when debates about the identity of Christ threatened Christian unity, Cyril boldly proclaimed that Jesus Christ is truly God and truly man, one divine Person who came into the world for the salvation of humanity.
His leadership at the Council of Ephesus became one of the defining moments in the history of Christianity.
Saint Cyril was born around the year 376 AD in Alexandria, Egypt.
At that time, Alexandria was one of the most important intellectual and religious centres of the Roman Empire. It was famous for its schools, libraries, and deep tradition of Christian scholarship.
Cyril grew up in a Christian environment surrounded by Scripture, theology, and the writings of earlier Church leaders.
His uncle, Theophilus of Alexandria, was the Patriarch of Alexandria and played an important role in his education and formation.
Through study and prayer, Cyril developed a deep understanding of the Bible and the teachings of the Church.
In 412 AD, Cyril succeeded his uncle and became Patriarch of Alexandria.
The position carried great responsibility. Alexandria was one of the major centres of Christianity, alongside Rome, Constantinople, and Antioch.

He worked to strengthen Christian communities, defend orthodox teaching, and promote unity among believers.

The greatest challenge of Cyril’s life came through a theological dispute involving Nestorius.
Nestorius questioned whether Mary should be called Theotokos, meaning “Mother of God.” He preferred the title “Mother of Christ” because he wanted to emphasise the distinction between Christ’s divine and human realities.
Cyril believed this teaching created a danger because it could suggest that Jesus was divided into two separate persons.
For Cyril, the truth was clear: the one born from Mary was the eternal Son of God who had truly become human.
Therefore, calling Mary the Mother of God protected the central Christian belief that Jesus Christ is fully divine and fully human.
In 431 AD, the Church gathered at the Council of Ephesus to resolve the controversy.
Saint Cyril played a leading role in the council.
The council affirmed that Jesus Christ is one Person, the eternal Son of God made flesh, and approved the title Theotokos for the Virgin Mary.
This decision was not simply about a title for Mary. It was a declaration about who Jesus is.
