Naypyidaw, Myanmar, March 28, 2025: A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday afternoon, sending strong tremors across the region, including Bangkok, Thailand, and China’s Yunnan province.
The quake occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time and was followed a few minutes later by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock in Myanmar’s Sagaing region, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Germany’s GFZ Centre for Geosciences. Beijing’s quake agency reported a 7.9-magnitude reading in its Yunnan province.
Widespread Damage in Myanmar
In Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, roads buckled, and buildings suffered severe damage. Witnesses reported chunks of ceilings collapsing, sending terrified residents and workers rushing into the streets. Additionally, the historic Ava Bridge, which connects the Ava and Sagaing regions, reportedly collapsed.
Strong Tremors in Thailand and China
In Thailand, tremors disrupted daily life, particularly in the northern parts of the country. The quake caused widespread panic in the Thai capital, Bangkok, which is home to over 17 million people. Alarms blared as buildings shook, prompting evacuations in condominiums, hotels, and office towers. Residents quickly descended from staircases and gathered in the streets, seeking safety.
In Bangkok’s bustling Chatuchak Market, an under-construction building collapsed. Some metro and light rail services in Thailand were temporarily suspended as authorities assessed infrastructure safety.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who was on an official visit to Phuket, announced on X (formerly Twitter) that she had cut her trip short to hold an urgent emergency meeting.
China’s Yunnan province also experienced tremors, with Beijing’s quake agency reporting a 7.9-magnitude reading. Authorities there are monitoring for potential aftershocks.
Ongoing Assessments and Safety Measures
As of now, no confirmed casualties have been reported, but authorities in Myanmar, Thailand, and China continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
Despite the earthquake’s strength, no tsunami warning has been issued. Geological agencies are closely monitoring aftershocks and structural risks, while residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant and follow official safety guidelines.
