CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy, June 17, 2025: Pope Leo XIV will spend parts of July and August at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, according to an official statement published by the Prefecture of the Papal Household on Tuesday.
The statement mentioned that the Pope will travel to the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo on the afternoon of Sunday, July 6, for a period of summer rest. He is scheduled to remain there until July 20, and will return again for the Feast of the Assumption on August 15.
Pope Leo's Schedule During His Stay at the Papal Residence in Castel Gandolfo
On Sunday, July 13, Pope Leo XIV will celebrate Mass in the morning at the Pontifical Parish of Saint Thomas of Villanova. At noon, he will lead the recitation of the Angelus in Liberty Square, in front of the Apostolic Palace.
The following Sunday, July 20, the Pope will celebrate Mass in the morning at the Cathedral of Albano and once again lead the Angelus prayer at noon in Castel Gandolfo’s Liberty Square before returning to the Vatican later that afternoon.
The Holy Father will then remain in the Vatican until mid-August. His return to Castel Gandolfo will coincide with the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15, when he will celebrate Mass at the Pontifical Parish of Castel Gandolfo. At noon, the Pope will recite the Angelus in Liberty Square.
The following Sunday, August 17, the Pope will deliver another Angelus address in Liberty Square at noon before departing for the Vatican that afternoon.
In line with the Pope's summer schedule, the Vatican has suspended all his private audiences and weekly general audiences for most of July. The weekly General Audiences will resume on July 30.
The tradition of papal summer retreats in Castel Gandolfo, long observed by previous pontiffs, is being continued by Pope Leo XIV as a moment of pastoral presence and spiritual reflection.
