Pope Francis in Papua New Guinea: A People United in Prayer Have a Future

Papua New Guinea, September 7, 2024: On his initial full day in Papua New Guinea, Pope Francis engaged with the nation’s leaders, civil society representatives, and diplomats. The Pope was welcomed at APEC House in Port Moresby on the morning of September 7.

Governor General Sir Bob Bofend Dadae extended a warm reception, acknowledging the historical and ongoing contributions of the Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea.

Pope Francis praised the country’s “extraordinary cultural richness" with hundreds of islands and over eight hundred spoken languages.

Addressing the nation’s natural resources, Pope Francis emphasized that these are “gifts from God intended for the whole community.” He stressed the importance of considering the needs of local populations to improve their living conditions.

The Pope voiced his desire for an end to tribal violence, urging the people to work together towards peace and improved living conditions. He highlighted the importance of dialogue in enhancing health, education, and employment opportunities.

Encouraging Christians to transcend mere ritual observance, the Pope described his visit’s theme with one word: “Pray". He highlighted that a people grounded in prayer draws strength and hope from above.

In closing, Pope Francis honored the legacy of Blessed Peter To Rot, Blessed John Mazzucconi, PIME, and all missionaries who have dedicated their lives to the region, offering strength and hope to the people.
