Lebanon, April 21, 2026 : In a development that has drawn widespread condemnation across the globe, a photo showing an Israeli soldier damaging a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon has sparked outrage among religious communities and international observers. The image, which circulated widely on social media, depicts the soldier using a sledgehammer to strike the statue in the Christian village of Debel.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the image is authentic, stating that it indeed shows one of its soldiers operating in southern Lebanon. In an official statement, the military expressed that it views the incident with “great severity,” noting that the soldier’s actions are inconsistent with the values expected of its personnel. An investigation has been launched, and authorities have indicated that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken through the chain of command.
The incident reportedly took place amid ongoing tensions in the region, where Israeli forces have been active following hostilities involving Hezbollah. The village of Debel, where the statue was located, is known for its Christian population, adding to the sensitivity surrounding the act.
Reacting strongly, Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by the incident and condemned it in the strongest terms. He reiterated that Israel upholds values of religious tolerance and respect for all faiths, expressing regret for the hurt caused to Christians in Lebanon and around the world.
Similarly, Gideon Sa’ar described the act as “shameful” and offered an apology, assuring that strict measures would be taken against those responsible. Other officials, including President Isaac Herzog, also voiced strong condemnation.
The IDF has stated that it has identified the soldier involved and that the Northern Command is handling the investigation. In addition to disciplinary action, the military has also indicated that it will assist the local Christian community in restoring the damaged statue.
The incident has provoked strong reactions internationally, with religious leaders and governments expressing concern over the desecration of a sacred symbol. It has also reignited discussions on the protection of religious sites and the importance of upholding respect for all faith traditions, especially in conflict zones.
Observers note that the destruction or damage of religious symbols and places of worship is considered a violation of international humanitarian norms, further intensifying calls for accountability.
As investigations continue, the episode stands as a reminder of the deep sensitivities surrounding religious symbols and the need for restraint, respect, and responsibility, particularly in regions marked by conflict and diversity.
