Over 200 Altar Servers Unite in Sindhudurg for Training and Fellowship

Sindhudurg, August 11 2025 — Altar servers from parishes across the Diocese of Sindhudurg came together at the Navsarni Pastoral Centre for the Altar Servers’ Rally on August 10, centred on the theme “Serving with Reverence, Joy, and Faith.” The event drew 213 participants and was marked by faith, formation, and fellowship.

Sessions on spiritual formation focused on the profound meaning of service at the altar, the importance of reverence and prayer, and nurturing a personal relationship with Christ. The guidance and encouragement of Rt. Rev. Bishop Alwyn Barreto and Diocesan Administrator Fr. Andrew D’Mello were instrumental in shaping the day’s programme.

Practical training formed a significant part of the event, with attendees learning proper posture, gestures, and movements during Mass, along with familiarity with sacred vessels, vestments, and liturgical elements. Demonstrations on processions, bell-ringing, and assisting the priest helped participants refine their skills.

The sessions were enriched by the contributions of Fr. Roger D’Souza, Fr. Richard Saldanha, and Fr. Wallvin Fernandes, who provided inspiring inputs on teamwork, responsibility, and leadership as young members of the Church. Lively action songs led by Fr. Thomas and vibrant music from the Sawantwadi Choir Group added energy to the gathering.

A Eucharistic Celebration led by Fr. Milton Monteiro left a deep impression on the participants through his meaningful homily. The cooperation of parish priests, animators, and parents played a vital role in enabling the altar servers to attend and benefit from the formation, making the rally a resounding success.

Planning and coordination were overseen by Fr. Wilson Gonsalves, supported by the hospitality and excellent preparations of the Navsarni Diocesan Pastoral Centre staff.

The rally strengthened the altar servers’ dedication to their ministry, inspiring them to uphold the values of reverence, joy, and faith in their service at the altar.
