Outrage as Chhattisgarh BJP Shares Derogatory Cartoon of Nuns Despite Bail Order

Bilaspur, August 2, 2025 – Despite the recent bail granted to two Catholic nuns following what many have called an unjust arrest and detention, the BJP leadership in Chhattisgarh has drawn widespread criticism for continuing its provocative stance.

Earlier today, the official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle of BJP Chhattisgarh posted a cartoon depicting two nuns placing a noose around a young girl’s neck while forcing a crucifix on her, with political leaders kneeling behind them. The politically charged image, shared via the state BJP’s verified account, quickly went viral and was later deleted amidst growing controversy.

Just a day earlier, the prosecution had opposed the nuns’ bail plea, claiming the investigation was in its early stages. This came in stark contrast to an assurance from Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Kerala MPs on Thursday, promising that the Chhattisgarh government would not object to the bail and that the nuns would be released. The state’s contradictory legal position fuelled public anger and triggered widespread protests.

Following nine days in custody, the nuns were granted bail today by the NIA Special Court in Bilaspur. The conditions of the bail included surrendering their passports, securing two sureties, and furnishing a bond of ₹50,000 each.

While the legal relief brought temporary respite, the BJP’s continued mockery—especially in the wake of the court’s decision—has only heightened public criticism. Many are now urging the party’s state leadership to clarify its official position on the matter.
