Malkangiri, Odisha, June 21, 2025 : Over 30 people were injured in a violent attack on the Christian community in Kotamateru village, Malkangiri district, early Saturday morning, prompting urgent calls for relief and justice from Bishop Pallab Kumar Lima, a leading Christian figure in Odisha.
According to reports, a mob of nearly 1,500 to 2,000 individuals from nearby villages descended on Kotamateru in the morning, assaulting residents and damaging property. At least 20 people suffered serious injuries, while others sustained minor wounds. The attack unfolded in the remote Matapaka Gram Panchayat, under the jurisdiction of Malkangiri Police Station.
Due to the village’s isolation, news of the violence was delayed until one resident managed to contact a local pastor, who alerted the police. Officers responded promptly, rescuing several injured victims and transporting them to Malkangiri District Hospital. Others have taken shelter in a local church, which is now serving as a temporary relief centre.
The victims are in urgent need of medical assistance, food, clean water, clothing, and safe shelter. Community leaders and humanitarian groups have raised alarm over the deteriorating security conditions for Christian minorities in the state, warning of a rise in targeted attacks.
Bishop Pallab Kumar Lima, President of the National Christian Board (Odisha Chapter) and a senior leader in the Church of North India, condemned the incident. Widely respected for his advocacy of religious freedom and minority rights, Bishop Lima has often led peaceful demonstrations and engaged with authorities to protect persecuted communities.
“This is a grave humanitarian crisis,” Bishop Lima said. “The government must act immediately to provide relief, ensure justice for the victims, and prevent such attacks from recurring. No one should suffer violence because of their faith.”
He further called on civil society and relief agencies to assist the affected families and uphold constitutional protections for religious minorities.
The Malkangiri attack is the latest in a series of concerning incidents targeting Christians in Odisha. Rights organisations are urging state and national authorities to increase protection measures and respond decisively to communal violence.
