Kerala Priest Donates School for Displaced Families in Manipur

Imphal, Feb. 10, 2026: A newly built school was inaugurated on February 7 at the Catholic resettlement centre for internally displaced persons (IDPs) at V. Munpi in Manipur, offering renewed hope to families rebuilding their lives after the recent ethnic violence.

The school was made possible through the contribution of Fr. Joseph Koluthuvellil, executive director and secretary of Welfare Services Ernakulam, who was present for the inauguration. The building was blessed by Fr. Varghese Vellickakam, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Imphal.

Though simple in structure, the new facility marks a significant step forward for the displaced community. The resettlement centre currently comprises 76 houses built with the support of the Archdiocese of Imphal and Catholic donors. Also present at the ceremony were Fr. Mung, parish priest of St. Thomas Parish, Singngat, three religious sisters, and members of the resettled families.

Speaking at a brief felicitation programme, Fr. Mung highlighted the struggles faced by the IDPs, many of whom are adapting to a new environment without prior experience in farming or business. He described education as a vital foundation for rebuilding lives with dignity.

Fr. Varghese, recalling the early stages of the housing project, emphasised the importance of self-reliance and gratitude. He said the project became a reality through divine providence and urged the displaced families to value what they had received and use it wisely for their future.

Addressing the gathering, Fr. Joseph expressed his joy at being able to support the people of Manipur during a time of crisis. Reflecting on his six years of service with Welfare Services Ernakulam, he described the school as a crucial investment in the children’s future. He also noted his contribution to another resettlement centre at Belpuan, where a church is currently under construction.

Fr. Joseph thanked the displaced families for their unity and hard work, as well as the local clergy for their guidance. Stressing the transformative power of education, he said the school aims to open new opportunities for the children and assured continued support, including assistance for higher education in Kerala for interested students.

The new school stands as a symbol of solidarity and hope for the displaced community as they strive to rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience.
