Indian Youth’s Encounter with God’s Transformative Love

In the heart of Sikkim, amidst towering mountains and lush valleys, a young girl's journey unfolded- a journey marked by discovery, faith and profound transformation. Jessica Sumon Lepcha, once burdened by confusion and turmoil, emerged as a beacon of hope for young Catholics seeking connection and purpose. Her story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of faith.

Childhood and Upbringing

Growing up in Gangtok, Jessica was surrounded by the beauty of her ancestral lands and the rich traditions of the Lepcha community. With parents who were both teachers, Jessica learned early on about the importance of love and acceptance. Her father’s transition from Buddhism to Catholicism brought a unique perspective to their family, while her mother’s faith laid the foundation for their spiritual lives.

Family visits to Phensong, her father's homeland, were infused with a blend of traditions. Jessica recalls moments when her mother would guide her and her brother through the complexities of their dual heritage, teaching them to honour both faiths and embrace the love that transcended differences. These experiences shaped Jessica's understanding of faith as an act of love, woven into the fabric of her family life.

For Jessica, the church became a sanctuary during challenging times. It was here, during her father’s illness, that she first encountered the depth of her faith. In a moment of desperation, she cried out to God, promising to surrender her life to His will. This heartfelt prayer marked a turning point, solidifying her commitment to God.

The church was more than a place of worship; it was where she found true peace. Even in her darkest hours, she felt a connection to something greater, a presence that reassured her of His love and guidance.

A Transformative Encounter with God

At the tender age of nine, Jessica’s world was shattered by a single revelation: she was adopted. The casual comment from a distant relative ignited a storm of confusion and identity crises. She withdrew from her family and her faith, spiraling into a world of anger and frustration. Her struggle to reconcile her identity with her circumstances led her away from the very faith that had once provided solace.

The turning point came unexpectedly during a prayer service at her church. Drawn back to the sanctuary she once loved, Jessica found herself overwhelmed with emotion. As she wept, a profound silence enveloped her and she heard a whisper: "You are Mine." In that moment, the weight of her turmoil lifted, replaced by a sense of belonging that transcended her earthly identity. She understood that she was not just adopted by her parents but embraced by a divine love that called her by name.

Jessica’s faith transformed from a passive belief to an active relationship. The trials she faced deepened her understanding of God as a friend who walks beside her. She began to engage openly with her feelings joy, anger, and doubt recognizing that each emotion was a step on her journey.

Her experiences fostered a profound connection with God, allowing her to see His presence in every aspect of her life. In moments of darkness, she felt His light guiding her, reminding her that faith is not about perfection but about genuine connection.

Inspiring Youth Leadership

Jessica's journey ignited a passion for youth leadership. She wanted to create a space where young people could explore their faith, voice their struggles and find community. Drawing inspiration from Jesus’ ability to unite diverse individuals, Jessica focused on nurturing relationships among youth in her church. She emphasized the importance of belonging and support, fostering a culture where every voice mattered.

As a youth leader, Jessica recognized the challenges faced by her peers pressure to conform, navigate mental health issues and seek identity in a complex world. She advocates for open dialogue within the Church, encouraging young people to share their experiences and ask difficult questions. By fostering an inclusive environment, she aims to empower youth to be active participants in shaping their faith and community.

A Message for Struggling Youth

Jessica’s message to young Catholics struggling with their faith is one of hope and encouragement. She emphasizes the importance of questioning, encouraging them to embrace doubt as a part of their journey. "Be like Saint Thomas," she advises, "and seek answers with courage."

She reminds them that their struggles do not diminish their faith; rather, they enrich it. Jessica encourages her peers to approach God with honesty, sharing their fears and desires, knowing He is always ready to listen. Trusting in God’s timing, she assures them that answers will come, bringing peace and clarity in their spiritual journey.
