How God Answered a Widow's Prayer Through Her Parish Community in Imphal

Imphal, July 16, 2026: When life fell apart for Jacinta Awungshi, St. Joseph Cathedral Parish, Imphal, became more than the church she attended—it became the place where she rediscovered hope. Left to raise four children after the sudden death of her husband, Jacinta's journey became a moving witness to how faith and a caring community can transform lives.

A Life Changed Overnight

A lifelong Catholic and private school teacher, Jacinta's life took a painful turn on 4 March 2011 when her husband passed away unexpectedly. As the only child of her parents, she felt isolated, emotionally broken and burdened with raising four children—three sons and a daughter.

Her late husband had served in a government post, but completing the official procedures after his death seemed impossible. With little knowledge of office processes and no financial resources, she felt helpless. An inferiority complex made even asking for help difficult, while one question constantly troubled her: "What will people think of me now that I am a widow?"

When Prayer Opened a New Path

In the midst of her struggles, the Rosary became Jacinta's greatest source of strength. Every day, she turned to prayer, asking God to send one trustworthy person who could guide her.

It was during this difficult period that her parish priest invited her to attend a three-day Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) training organised by the Archdiocese of Imphal. The programme introduced her more deeply to the Word of God and Gospel Sharing, opening a new chapter in her life.

A Community That Walked With Her

Together with an MC Sister, Jacinta began visiting families and sharing the Gospel. Despite her own financial limitations, she recharged her simple Nokia phone with Rs. 30 every Sunday to personally invite people to BEC sharing.

As participation gradually increased, the gatherings became spaces where people listened, shared their struggles and encouraged one another through the Word of God. Although her own problems remained unresolved, Jacinta's faith grew stronger with each passing week, replacing loneliness with a sense of belonging.

When God Answered Through People

One day, while she was at school, Jacinta was informed that someone had come looking for her. Waiting outside was a well-known catechist who told her that a person from her late husband's office had been searching for her and had insisted on meeting her through him.

Within two to three months, with proper guidance and support, she received the amount due from her husband's office. For Jacinta, it was God answering the prayer she had offered before attending the BEC training. Fear gave way to confidence, and despair was replaced by hope.

A Living Bridge of Hope

Looking back, Jacinta believes the Basic Ecclesial Community helped rebuild her life through Gospel Sharing, accompaniment and trust in God. Today, she sees BEC as more than a gathering—it is a living bridge that connects broken hearts to healing and individuals to a caring faith community.

Reflecting on her journey, she encourages others to trust in the Word of God, believing that sincere participation in BEC sharing allows God to work through people and bring hope even in life's most difficult moments.
