CATECHETICAL DIPLOMA COURSE!
THE SOUL OF THE LITURGY: MUSIC IN THE SERVICE OF THE SACRED

Mumbai, August 24, 2025: Fr. Antony Charanghat, the former Chief Editor of The Examiner, one of India’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic magazines, has been selected for the Louis Careno Award. Fr. Charanghat, who retired as Editor of The Examiner on 31 May 2024 after a remarkable 30-year tenure, is being recognised for his outstanding contribution to Catholic journalism.

During his leadership of The Examiner, Fr. Charanghat set high standards in writing and transformed the magazine in terms of presentation, style, reach, and publication quality. He ensured that the periodical remained faithful to its raison d’être as a Catholic publication while elevating its legacy to new heights.

Ordained as a priest for the Archdiocese of Bombay, Fr. Charanghat enjoyed an association of nearly 50 years with The Examiner. He assumed the role of Editor in June 1994 and served in that capacity until 2024. In addition to editing The Examiner, he also served as Director of the Catholic Communications Office and as spokesperson for the archdiocese.

The Louis Careno Award will be formally conferred on Fr. Antony Charanghat during the 30th National Convention of Christian Journalists, organised by the Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA), to be held in Pune on Saturday, 20 September 2025.

Fr. Charanghat’s editorials in The Examiner were widely appreciated for their clarity in illuminating Catholic doctrine and addressing misinterpretations on matters of faith and Catholic teaching. Throughout his tenure, he worked closely with all the Archbishops of Bombay.

Founded in 1850 and based in Mumbai, The Examiner recently marked 175 years of publication. It serves the Archdiocese of Bombay and covers spirituality, liturgy, scripture, catechism, along with secular issues affecting the Christian community in India.

Awarded annually to individuals or institutions, the Louis Careno Award for Excellence in Journalism is a joint initiative of the Mumbai Province of the Salesians of Don Bosco and the ICPA, a premier organisation of Catholic journalists, dailies, and periodicals in India. The association was established in 1964 by Fr. John Barrett, an American Jesuit from the Patna Province.
