Final Moments and Words of Pope Francis

VATICAN, 22 April 2025:

"Thank You for Bringing Me Back to the Square"

In one of his final expressions, Pope Francis turned to his personal healthcare assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti, and offered a heartfelt thank-you. The gratitude was for encouraging one last ride in the popemobile after the Easter Sunday Urbi et Orbi blessing. That ride allowed him to be among the faithful in St. Peter’s Square—one final embrace that echoed the spirit of his pontificate.

“Do You Think I Can Manage It?”

On Holy Saturday, Pope Francis and Strappetti walked through St Peter’s Basilica to rehearse the path for the following day. As crowds grew from 35,000 to 50,000 on Easter morning, the Pope turned to his aide and asked gently, “Do you think I can manage it?” With encouragement, he entered the popemobile—for what would be his last public appearance.

A Final Act of Connection

The ride through the Square was filled with affection—especially from children. It marked his return to the people after weeks in hospital, and it became a final act of presence. The moment was spontaneous, simple, and deeply symbolic—true to the man who always prioritised connection with the faithful.

The Quiet Passing

That evening, the Pope rested peacefully and had a simple dinner. At around 5:30 a.m. the next morning, signs of illness emerged. Surrounded by his caretakers at Casa Santa Marta, he gave a final wave to Strappetti before slipping into a coma. He passed soon after—calmly, without suffering, and in the quiet of dawn.

The People's Pope Bids Farewell

Just a day earlier, Pope Francis had once again appeared before the world to bless the city and the globe. True to his promise from the balcony of St. Peter’s in 2013, he remained close to the people till the very end—walking with them, praying for them, and finally, saying farewell among them.
