Bellary, February 10, 2025 – The Bellary Diocese mourns the tragic passing of Fr. Nixson A, 35, and Bro. Arun, 21, who lost their lives in a fatal road accident while returning from Huvina Hadagali after celebrating Mass. Fr. Nixson, the Parish Priest of Queen of Angels Church, Kottur Mission, died on the spot, while Bro. Arun, a Regent, succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Davangere.
Bishop Henry D’Souza of the Bellary Diocese expressed deep sorrow, describing Fr. Nixson as a dedicated and compassionate priest who had recently taken on his first full-time responsibility in Kottur Mission. “He was instrumental in establishing a new school and served as Secretary for the Prison Ministry, showing profound compassion for the poor and incarcerated. His service extended beyond the church, as he actively organised health camps and special programs for prisoners, particularly on Christmas, Republic Day and other festive occassions. He was a very enthusiastic and committed priest,” Bishop Henry recollected.
Bro. Arun, who had completed his philosophy studies, had been working closely with Fr. Nixson for three months. Bishop Henry noted that Bro. Arun had a deep love for the poor and approached his work with genuine dedication. “Their sudden passing is an immense loss to the diocese,” Bishop Henry stated. “We lost very young souls. However, God has His own plan for everybody and we can only say yes to His holy will.”
Fr. Nixson’s mortal remains rest at the mortuary in Huvina Hadagali, while Bro. Arun’s body is at a hospital in Davangere. Their funeral mass will take place on Monday, February 10, at 4:00 PM at St. Anthony’s Cathedral.
The Diocesan Secretary of Bellary, Fr. Sunil Anselm, fondly remembered Fr. Nixson, saying, “Fr. Nixson had become a beloved figure in Bellary Diocese. His warm approachability and welcoming smile made him accessible to everyone, regardless of age or background. He possessed a rare ability to connect with both the young and the old, leaving a lasting impression on all who met him.”
Bishop Henry extended his heartfelt condolences to priests, religious communities, and the faithful of Munirabad and Jawalgera parishes, urging everyone to remain united in prayer during this time of grief. The Bellary Diocese remembers Fr. Nixson and Bro. Arun for their unwavering faith and selfless service, praying for their eternal rest.
