Chicalim, February 10, 2025 – In celebration of World Wetlands Day and its 2025 theme, "Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future," the Chicalim Youth Farmers Club (CYFC) organized an educational initiative to highlight the ecological importance of Chicalim’s pond ecosystems. The program, held on February 7, was conducted in collaboration with Regina Mundi School, the Diocesan Commission of Ecology Goa, and the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) of Chicalim. The event attracted 40 participants, including villagers, students, and key local figures such as Chicalim BMC Chairman Rui Costa Araujo and panchayat members Roman Vaz and Francisco Nunes.
Supported by the Goa State Council of Science and Technology, the initiative provided attendees with insights into the crucial role of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance. Dr. Fr. Bolmax Pereira, an assistant professor of Botany at St. Joseph Vaz College, Cortalim, served as the resource person, offering valuable knowledge about the history and unique characteristics of Chicalim’s ponds. Participants explored seven ponds located in the Gina – Penta – Deussa ward of the village, reinforcing the connection between local communities and the sustainable management of their natural resources.
During the walk, participants expressed their appreciation for the region’s natural beauty and the need for conservation. Chicalim residents Juvencio and Lucia Fernandes shared their thoughts, stating, "We had a walk towards our village ponds, which are great, naturally breathing, and support the land with plants. We wish that this God-given place could be preserved."
Sergio Rodrigues, another participant, described the experience as eye-opening. “The beauty of these ecosystems, rich in biodiversity, was both fascinating and educational. However, the sight of ongoing construction encroaching upon these wetlands was disheartening.”
Students from Regina Mundi School actively engaged in the program, emphasising the importance of fostering environmental awareness among young minds. Alisha Pereira, treasurer of CYFC and a teacher at Regina Mundi School, stated, "This program represents a crucial step in raising community awareness regarding the significance of our local wetland ecosystems. By educating both residents and students, we are empowering them to become active stakeholders in conservation efforts."
Priyanka Bhukta, a Class 9 student, voiced concern about the ongoing destruction of these fragile ecosystems, stressing the urgent need for conservation. Rafaad Shaikh, another Class 9 student, expressed amazement at the unique irrigation system of the ponds and its benefits to the surrounding area.
Chief guest Rizzeria Pacheco addressed the participants, warning against rapid urbanisation’s impact on Chicalim’s wetlands. “Chicalim’s ancient irrigation system and thriving mangroves are the backbone of its wetlands, sustaining life for generations. But rapid urbanisation threatens this delicate balance. A small effort today ensures a thriving ecosystem tomorrow. Protect wetlands, preserve life.”
The program’s success demonstrated the power of community collaboration in environmental conservation, bringing together a local youth organization, an educational institution, a religious commission, and local governance. CYFC plans to build on this initiative by organizing future programs to engage the community in preserving Chicalim’s natural heritage.
