Diocesan Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) Meet in Agra Highlights the Role of Communities

Agra, October 18, 2025: The Archdiocese of Agra held its Diocesan Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) Meet on the theme “The Importance of BEC in the Synodal Church.” The gathering brought together priests, religious, and lay faithful from across the Archdiocese to deepen their understanding of the Church’s mission through BECs.

In his inaugural address, Archbishop Raphy Manjaly of Agra welcomed participants and resource persons, drawing a connection between the Synodal Church and BECs. He emphasised that the three pillars of synodality—participation, communion, and mission—are lived out concretely in BECs. Comparing the Church to the human body, he remarked that “just as the head cannot function apart from the body, every part of the Church must work together in unity.”

Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan of Punalur, Chairman of the BEC Commission of the CCBI, highlighted the importance of Church documents and papal encyclicals in guiding BECs, noting how they provide a strong foundation for community life rooted in faith and action.

Sr Christine, National BEC Coordinator, spoke on the essence of BECs as a way of life rather than mere meetings or group discussions. She underlined that “anyone desiring eternal life must pass through the experience of BECs,” and that “to know BECs is to know Jesus and the Kingdom of God.”

Mr Emmanuel, National BEC Member, reflected on BECs as vital expressions of the Body of Christ within neighbourhoods. He noted that through BECs, the faithful strengthen their bonds with one another and make Christ visible in their communities.

The Diocesan BEC Meet reaffirmed the Archdiocese’s commitment to fostering communion and participation at every level of parish life, ensuring that the spirit of synodality continues to grow through vibrant Basic Ecclesial Communities.
