Dibrugarh, 13 March 2025 — The Dibrugarh Diocese hosted a Jubilee of Social Communication celebration on 11 March 2025, aimed at enhancing the skills of priests and religious within the diocese. This event was part of a broader series of over 30 celebrations organised as part of the Year of Jubilee, planned by Bishop Albert Hemrom, Chairman of the Social Communication Commission of the Northeast Bishops' Council.
Fr. Gabriel, Judicial Vicar of Dibrugarh, connected the Jubilee's theme of "Pilgrims of Hope" with Pope Francis' message for the 59th World Communications Day. He emphasised the importance of fostering hope through effective communication.
Bishop Albert's keynote address highlighted the vast opportunities presented by mobile devices for engagement and learning. Rev. Dr. Cyril Victor Joseph, CCBI Media Apostolate Coordinator, led a session on maximising the effective use of mobile technology, showcasing its capabilities through a live survey and practical demonstration.
The sessions addressed the evolving challenges of the contemporary media landscape, including global instability and the risks of machine-driven communication. Fr. Cyril emphasised the need for responsible digital stewardship, cautioning against overdependence on technology and highlighting the increasing responsibilities of the Church in navigating these challenges.
A session focusing on digital scams warned participants about the risks of cybercrime, with Fr. Cyril presenting statistics showing over 1.2 million complaints filed in 2024 alone. He urged attendees to exercise discretion when engaging with technology and to be prudent and informed consumers of digital content.
The event brought together participants ranging from newly ordained priests to those nearing retirement, with some religious members unfamiliar with mobile technology learning alongside young novices adept at using these devices. Fr. Joseph Manickathan, diocesan Communication Director, shared plans from the Signis meeting to establish a dedicated social communication body for the northeast.
The Jubilee celebration inspired attendees to become proactive digital missionaries, harnessing technology to spread hope and share the Gospel. Through active engagement in the digital space, the Church can transform these platforms into channels of unity, understanding, and compassionate outreach. The event celebrated the significance of communication within the Church while highlighting the need for ongoing education and adaptation in the face of rapidly changing digital environments.
