Devotees to Enter through Main Door at Cathedral for St. Francis Xavier Exposition

Panaji, Goa: The upcoming Exposition of the sacred relics of St. Francis Xavier will offer devotees a transformative experience as they will enter the Se Cathedral through the main door for the first time. Previously held at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa, this year's event marks the 18th edition of the Exposition, drawing an expected eight million visitors from around the globe.

Fr. Patricio Fernandes noted that in the past, attendees quickly moved through the side door, often feeling rushed after kissing the relics. This new arrangement will foster a more contemplative environment, enabling visitors to prepare themselves spiritually.

The Se Cathedral, Goa's mother church, has stood as an architectural and historical landmark since its construction between 1562 and 1634. It serves as the archbishop's seat and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the Basilica of Bom Jesus, where the relics are permanently housed in a four-century-old silver Mastrillian casket.

The side door will still provide access for physically challenged individuals, who will enter via buggies and wheelchairs without hindrance.

Unlike previous events, a specially-designed electric carriage will transport the relics instead of volunteers carrying them on their shoulders, ensuring a dignified and secure procession.

Devotees will have the opportunity to venerate the relics for 45 days before they return to the Basilica on January 5, 2025. This year's Exposition promises to deepen the spiritual experience for those who travel far and wide to pay homage to St. Francis Xavier.
