Gulbarga, July 19, 2025: In a heartening display of compassion and commitment to social reintegration, Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust, in collaboration with Prison Ministry India and the Diocese of Gulbarga, has launched a computer training programme for the inmates of Kalaburagi Central Jail. Initiated in July 2025, the programme aims to empower 30 prisoners with essential digital skills—enhancing their chances of securing employment and leading independent lives post-release.
The three-month course is fully sponsored by Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust, which has contributed ₹30,000 towards the initiative. The training focuses on practical computer education and reflects the Church’s broader mission to uplift the marginalised and bring about social transformation through rehabilitation and empowerment.
The inauguration ceremony was held within the jail premises and was graced by several key dignitaries, including Dr. Anitha, Chief Superintendent of Kalaburagi Central Jail; Fr. Deepak Thomas, O.C.D., Superior of the Carmelite Fathers; Fr. William Miranda, O.C.D., Director of Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust; and Fr. Maxim, S.J., Secretary of Prison Ministry India for the Diocese of Gulbarga. All 30 participating inmates were presented with T-shirts, notebooks, and pens as symbols of encouragement and a fresh start.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Anitha underlined the transformative potential of such initiatives. She highlighted that skill-based rehabilitation programmes not only reduce the likelihood of repeat offences but also enable individuals to return to society with renewed dignity and purpose. “Programmes like this can play a crucial role in reducing crime and fostering peace in society,” she said.
More than just a technical course, this computer training initiative stands as a beacon of hope and a testament to the Church’s mission of mercy. By investing in the personal growth of inmates, Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust and Prison Ministry India are offering a second chance to those often forgotten by society.
Through such outreach efforts, the Diocese of Gulbarga continues to serve as a light for those on the margins, working towards a more just and compassionate society where everyone is given the opportunity to live with dignity and peace.
